About the School

The Magnetic Structure Determination Workshop 2016 is part of an annual series alternately organized by the Quantum Condensed Matter Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate of ORNL and the NIST Center for Neutron Research and the University of Maryland. This year, the school is co-hosted by the Florida State University.

The school aims to enhance the community studying magnetism in materials by learning from experts the essential theoretical foundations to magnetic representation analysis and work through real examples to gain experience in solving and refining magnetic structures from neutron powder and single crystal diffraction data.

Registration is FREE but limited to 35 participants!

The workshop sessions will be held at the Florida State University Campus. The participants are expected to arrange for their own travel, board, and lodging in Talahassee. We are currently arranging for the availability of on-campus accommodation. Please check the accommodations section for off campus options.

Lectures and tutorial session will cover:

  1. Symmetry analysis using representation theory and SARAh program
  2. Refinement strategies using Fullprof Suite
  3. Magnetic structure determination from powder (constant wavelength and time-of-flight data) and single crystal data (constant wavelength)
  4. Simulated annealing approach for structure solution.

Second Workshop

A second workshop dedicated to “Symmetry based modeling of magnetic structures” has been held at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from August 23-26, 2016.

Materials presented during this workshop by Prof. J. M. Perez-Mato (of the University of the Basque Country, Spain) include lectures on Magnetic symmetries and magnetic superspacegroups, Hands-on demonstration of Bilbao Crystallographic Server tools and  Modeling commensurate and incommensurate structures with JANA software. The presented material is available on the Lecture Notes page.
