SNS-HFIR User Group (SHUG) to hold virtual Town Hall for Second Target Station (STS) Grand Challenges Report

This is an opportunity for the community to participate and contribute. Feedback from the community can be provided during the break-out sessions as well as with a feedback on-line form which will be distributed in the breakout sessions.

More than 100 scientific thought-leaders from three continents turned out for the Second Target Station (STS) Grand Challenges workshop in August. The STS is a major U.S. Department of Energy/Basic Energy Sciences (DOE/BES) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) that, once fully approved and completed, will add unprecedented science capabilities to the DOE user facility portfolio, enabling new opportunities for science and discoveries for the nation and worldwide user communities. Neutrons and the STS will provide unique information for the Grand Scientific Challenges for the coming decades in quantum materials, soft matter and polymers, materials and engineering, chemistry and environmental science, and biological materials and systems. The workshop identified key opportunities and capabilities the STS will have to address those challenges over the next 10-20 years through next-generation neutron scattering.

To share the workshop's findings and gather valuable input from the neutron scattering community, the SNS-HFIR User Group (SHUG) Executive Committee is hosting a virtual Town Hall to present the prioritized directions, new capabilities, and future goals formed in the workshop. You are cordially invited to participate in this virtual town hall meeting and share your opinions. Your participation and feedback are essential in shaping the future of the STS and neutron scattering.

The Town Hall will be held from 2-4 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 26. Registration is open now, but you may register until close of business on November 25.

The deadline for SHUG to receive feedback is December 10. During the Town Hall, we will explain how to provide your feedback.
