The long-standing scientific collaboration in neutron scattering between the US and Japan through the US-Japan Cooperative Program on Neutron Scattering has proven highly productive both in scientific publication as well as instrument developments.  The US-Japan Workshop serves as a pivotal platform to foster scientific exchange and collaboration between researchers from both nations. This workshop aims to showcase the latest advancements and breakthroughs in neutron scattering techniques, emphasizing the significant contributions and innovative research outcomes of early career scientists. Participants will engage in discussions centered around critical topics for future collaboration, including the EPICS conversion for the triple-axis spectrometer, strategies for modernizing the powder diffractometer at JRR-3, and developments in neutron imaging techniques. Additionally, the workshop will consider a comprehensive review of the current instrument layout in the JRR-3 guide hall, with the aim of maximizing scientific output. This includes discussions on potential relocation, upgrades, and additions of instruments. From operational experience, strategies for designing and building an IRIS-style backend for MANTA, developing and procuring new crystals for monochromators and analyzers, new sample environment capabilities and expansion of the high-pressure neutron scattering program will be discussed.

A comprehensive dialogue on optimizing the best instrument suites for both continuous and pulsed neutron sources will also be a central theme. By bringing together experts and young researchers, this workshop will not only celebrate past achievements but will also lay the groundwork for future advancements in neutron scattering, ultimately contributing to the broader scientific community. Participants can expect a dynamic environment for networking, collaborative discussions, and inspiring presentations that highlight the vibrant future of neutron scattering research. The workshop features participants from JAEA and ORNL All interested scientists are invited. It will be hosted at ORNL on Tuesday/Wednesday 23rd - 24th of September prior to the meeting of the steering committee on US-Japan Cooperative Program on Neutron Scattering.
