DESCRIPTION:The Second Target Station (STS) Project is a major DOE-BES pro
ject that will add a new target and instrument station to the Spallation N
eutron Source. STS will provide transformative new capabilities to charact
erize materials with long-wavelength (cold) neutrons.\nThe goals for this
workshop are to more fully develop the STS science case\, identify priorit
y science opportunities that STS will uniquely address\, and redefine the
instrument suite to best deliver highest priority science. The workshop wi
ll begin with visionary perspectives of emerging and future grand challeng
es across five thematic science areas: Quantum Materials\, Soft Matter & P
 olymers\, Materials & Engineering\, Chemistry & Environmental Science\, an
d Biological Materials\, Systems & Human Health. Breakout working sessions
are organized along these same science themes.\nParticipants will give a
3-minute “elevator speech” expressing their vision of grand challenge
science that they will present during the first set of breakout sessions.
The goal is to promote discussion of emerging and future challenges facing
the nation over the next 10-20 years and the role that neutrons may uniqu
ely play in addressing those challenges.\nSome description of the unique c
apabilities anticipated at STS are described in the First Experiments Repo
rt which may be found along with other reference materials on this website
