From determining complex arrangements of spin to collective excitations that pinpoint exotic magnetic ground states, the extraordinary power of neutron scattering as a probe of quantum condensed matter is witnessed daily by users at ORNL's two neutron sources, HFIR and SNS. At these neutron user facilities, activities focus on neutron science and spreading the knowledge of neutron scattering. However, in exploring emerging quantum phenomena, other complementary techniques have revealed details that were unclear or even invisible to conventional neutron scattering.

For those reasons, ORNL is organizing a second workshop on neutron scattering and complementary techniques. Building on the success of the inaugural workshop held virtually in 2020, the conference will include a diverse audience and continue to grow the neutron scattering community for quantum materials research. Experts in neutron scattering and various other techniques will showcase how the techniques are indispensable and complementary in investigating quantum materials at the forefront of condensed matter research.

The workshop will include live online lectures with question and answer time to cover the key concepts and applications of various experimental technique – with a focus on how they complement neutrons. Selected science cases will highlight the strengths of the instruments at SNS and HFIR. Covered techniques will include neutron scattering, synchrotron x-ray scattering, electron energy loss spectroscopy, muon spin relaxation/rotation, optical spectroscopy, scanning microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal Hall effect measurement, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, uniaxial pressure device, and bulk magnetic property measurements. Speakers will be from the United States (BNL, BYU, Duke, MIT, MSU, ORNL, Rutgers, UMN, UTK, UPenn, UCSB, UIUC), Canada (McMaster) and Europe (Univ. of Zagreb).

The workshop will strengthen the existing neutron user community with access to ORNL’s state-of-the-art user facilities, either through collaborations with Neutron Sciences Directorate researchers or as external users, to use neutron scattering as a complementary tool for advancing their science.

The workshop will be a 3-day VIRTUAL event organized by scientists in the Neutron Scattering Division:

Songxue Chi (chis@ornl.gov)
Tao Hong (hongt@ornl.gov)
Wei Tian (tianwn@ornl.gov)
Qiang Zhang (zhangq6@ornl.gov)
Clarina R. Dela Cruz (delacruzcr@ornl.gov)

Advised by Matthew Stone (stonemb@ornl.gov) and Steve Nagler (naglerse@ornl.gov)

THERE IS NO REGISTRATION FEE for this virtual workshop, but please register by 5:00 p.m. EST, Friday, July 15, 2022.
