Non-Equilibrium And Emergent Transients in Advanced and Soft Materials

Join us at the SNS, buildg. 8600, room C-156  for a day of non-equilibrium science discussions and presentations at ORNL and the user facilities for neutron scattering and nano-science and computing.

Almost all systems in nature are influenced by nonequilibrium processes that span broad scales in space and time. However, most research has focused on investigating the equilibrium properties of matter. Developing an understanding of nonequilibrium processes presents unique opportunities for directing, manipulating, and controlling matter into states not accessible in equilibrium that are essential to discover new technologies. At the same time, such processes pose deep questions for basic science that equally apply across disciplines, including synthesis science to biology, soft matter, electronic systems and advanced materials. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), with its interdisciplinary expertise and world-leading capabilities for predicting, synthesizing, characterizing, and controlling matter across temporal and spatial scales, is poised to deliver impactful science and capabilities in this emerging research frontier. In particular, developing mode- and time-resolved neutron scattering capabilities at the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor, conjoined with theoretical developments, can open entirely new research directions for probing and understanding out-of-equilibrium states and dynamics of matter.

The presentations will highlight aspects of investigating, modeling and understanding non-equilibrium and states of matter across science fields.
