On behalf of the organizing committee, we invite you to join us at the "ORNL/Virginia Tech/ University of Virginia Joint Workshop in Neutron Science and Scattering," September 27, 2017, at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center.

The aim of this workshop is to establish stronger links between neutron sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and researchers at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and University of Virginia (UVA). Because of their fundamental physical properties, neutrons may be used to provide information about materials systems unattainable by other means. Neutron scattering experiments provide vital and unique tools for studying scientific topics from such diverse areas as materials science, chemistry, biology, soft matter, and quantum condensed matter. ORNL has two of the world’s most powerful neutron sources: the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Both of these sources are U.S. Department of Energy national user facilities. For more information, please visit http://neutrons.ornl.gov.

The workshop will consist of an overview of neutron scattering at ORNL followed by alternating sessions of presentations by ORNL researchers highlighting neutron scattering research and capabilities, and by Virginia Tech and UVA faculty and staff presenting selected scientific problems which may be solved using neutron scattering. These presentations will serve as the starting point for more in-depth discussions and follow up. Poster sessions and ample discussion time will be allotted during the day for one-on-one discussions aimed toward defining potential experiments and collaborations.
