Charter of the
Accelerator Advisory Committee

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) - Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) Accelerator Advisory Committee (AAC) reviews and advises the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) on accelerator operations and upgrades. The committee meets at least annually and reports to the ORNL Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for NScD.
The NScD Director provides a charge to the AAC in advance of each meeting. An agenda for each meeting is negotiated between the AAC chair, the SNS Research Accelerator Division (RAD) Director and the PPU director. The general subject of the reviews will pertain to:
- Ability to provide reliable neutron production
- Long term sustainable accelerator infrastructure and staff retention
- PPU project technical, cost and schedule progress
- R&D aimed at improved understanding and techniques for high power proton accelerators
- Coordination between the operations and project divisions
- Response to recommendations from previous reviews (including PPU project reviews)
It is anticipated that this list of activities will evolve over time.
The AAC is expected to address high-level strategic, programmatic, and planning issues, rather than specific implementation details. The committee will be allocated time to discuss amongst themselves, in a closed session, any issue without laboratory management present.
The AAC will issue a written report containing an evaluation of progress, and recommendations where warranted, to the NScD Director within a month of each meeting. The report may contain information that does not address the charge directly, but the Chair considers valuable advice to the laboratory. Membership on the committee will be for fixed three-year terms with ~30% turnover every year.
A verbal report will be presented at the end of each meeting followed by a written report to the ALD for Neutron Sciences submitted within 4 weeks. The AAC may also be asked to provide a briefing to the Neutron Advisory Board which meets yearly.

The committee meets at least annually and reports to the ORNL Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for NScD.

An agenda for each meeting is negotiated between the TAC chair, the SNS Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) Director, the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) Director and the PPU Director. The general subject of the reviews will pertain to:
- Ability to provide reliable neutron production
- Long term sustainable target infrastructure and staff retention
- PPU project technical, cost and schedule progress
- R&D aimed at improved understanding and techniques for reliable high-power target operation
- Coordination between the operations and project divisions
