Virtual HANDS2021: ORNL online course on Neutron Scattering Application in Structural Biology

This course is designed for graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty with knowledge of structure and function of biological macromolecules but with limited to no experience of  neutron scattering. The course will take place over two weeks and is entirely virtual:

Week 1 – June 21-25: Live lectures. Number of participants is unlimited.

Week 2 – June 28-30: Live tutorials. Attendance to week 1 lectures is required for participation in the tutorial sessions. (Number of participants is limited to 15. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis and requires submission of questions/problems.)

June 21– 25, 2021 (detailed schedule here)

The lectures will cover the basics of:

  • deuterium labeling,
  • small angle neutron scattering,
  • neutron reflectometry,
  • neutron spectroscopy,
  • neutron imaging
  • neutron crystallography.

Each lecture will introduce concepts in instrumentation, sample preparation, data collection and processing and data analysis and interpretation.

June 28– 30, 2021 (tentative schedule here)

Tutorial sessions will be held during June 28 – 30 for interested participants. A limited numbers of  participants (max. 15) who have attended the lectures AND submitted questions or problems with existing data will be granted access to the tutorials.

Questions can be submitted here

Participation to the live tutorial sessions will be granted to participants who submit their questions by Friday, June 25.

To submit a question: please use “HANDS2021:Technique” as the subject line. You may submit more than one question. The questions can be grouped by technique in a single email. You may submit questions for several techniques (send one email per technique).

Example 1:

Subject line: HANDS2021: SANS

Email body: I have expressed my favorite protein using E. coli grown in 70% D2O. How can I determine its match point?

Example 2:

Subject line: HANDS2021: Crystallography

Email body: How I can flag the same subset of reflections to calculate X-ray and Neutron Rfree in joint refinement?

Registration

Participants can register to attend the live event or register to watch recordings later. We ask that participants commit to at least 3 of the 5 days for registration to the live event. If the participants cannot commit to 3 days, we ask that they register to watch the recordings.

Registration is currently open and will close Friday, May 14.
