The QIKR instrument at STS will be a general-purpose horizontal-sample-surface reflectometer. Taking advantage of the enhanced brilliance of the Second Target Station (STS), QIKR will capture specular and off-specular reflectivity data more rapidly than current reflectometers. With pulse skipping (7.5 Hz), it will be possible to acquire complete specular reflectivity curves using a single instrument setting, allowing for a “cinematic” operation. The increased brilliance on QIKR means that traditional neutron detectors won’t cope with the detection rate required on QIKR. In this PDR, the proposed solution will be reviewed against the QIKR detector requirements imposed due to both the source characteristics and instrument design.

  1. Are the detector requirements adequately defined? Have all commissioning and operational scenarios been considered?
  2. Can the proposed detector system meet the defined performance requirements?
  3. Are the cost estimate, acquisition strategy and long term maintenance strategy reasonable?
  4. Are the proposed preliminary designs sufficiently mature to proceed to final design?
