Workshops

Monday, June 5

Data processing of neutron total scattering and avoiding pitfalls along the way

HFIR Bldg 7995, room 302B (meet at SNS building 8600 first for badging and bus transportation to HFIR)

Organizer: Yuanpeng Zhang, Neutron Scattering Scientist, Neutron Scattering Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: The workshop will instruct users of neutron total scattering on how to use data processing techniques. Users will learn about the importance of data post-processing, specifically when performing reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling. This will assist general users of total scattering diffractometers (at SNS and elsewhere) and instrument teams at SNS in turning total scattering data into solid, high-profile papers.

Magnetic structure determination from neutron diffraction data using GSAS-II

Bldg 8600 Room C-156

Organizer: Stuart Calder, Neutron Scattering Scientist, Neutron Scattering Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: GSAS-II is becoming more widely used for determining magnetic structures and is often the method of choice for ORNL-supported refinements. Users will be trained in the latest GSAS-II methods for magnetic structure determination and internal staff will learn about new software developments.

Single crystal data processing for direct geometry chopper spectrometers

ORNL Clinch River Cabin (meet at SNS building 8600 first for badging and carpooling to the cabin)

Organizer: Raphael Hermann, Senior Researcher, Materials Science and Technology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Martin Mourigal, Elwood P. Blanchard Associate Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology

Description: The full day workshop will include talks by neutron scattering scientists and users on data reduction, background removal, symmetrization and analysis of direct geometry spectrometer data. The workshop will emphasize user experience and challenges, including identifying needs, and report on the status of ongoing developments.

Thursday, June 8

Second Target Station satellite meeting

Bldg 8600 Iran Thomas Auditorium

Organizer: Leighton Coates, Group Leader for Instrument Systems, Second Target Station, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: The Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station (STS) will be a new, high-brightness source optimized for producing cold neutrons and will provide transformational new capabilities that complement the strengths of the current ORNL neutron sources. The high brightness of cold neutrons will enable time-resolved measurements of kinetic processes and provide more intense neutron beams to study smaller samples of newly discovered materials or materials in extreme environments. The STS pulse rate of 15 Hz will enable simultaneous measurement of hierarchical architectures across a broad range of length scales. This workshop will update the community on the STS project and seek to identify emerging and projected science grand challenges where neutrons and the STS instruments can provide unique information.
