Description

The European Spallation Source is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. Once completed it will deliver the highest quality of long-pulse neutron beams for fundamental and applied scientific research. Last year in 2018 commissioning of the ion source and the LEBT started and will continue with the start of operation of the test stand for the cryo-cavities this autumn and the commissioning of the normal conducting linear accelerator in Spring next year. For the installation and commissioning the radiation protection organization of the ESS needs to be developed which includes operational radiation protection as well as radiation protection services. Latter include radiological monitoring, tracking of activated material, dosimetry and radioactive waste management. In the presentation we will present our first experiences, challenges and lessons learned in radiation protection at the ESS during installation and commissioning.
